Istilah bersih diri diambil dari kata tazakka dalam ayat surah al-A'la [87]: 14. Allah SWT menegaskan bahwa orang yang pasti beruntung adalah yang membersihkan dirinya ( qad aflaha man tazakkaa ). Kata aflaha diartikan oleh ulama tafsir dengan faaza (menang). Maksudnya, menang terhadap setan dan hawa nafsu sehingga ia selamat dari dosa.
