It must be based upon Allah’s commandments. As Almighty Allah describes in Qur’an, “QAD AFLAHA MAN ZAKKAHA. WAQAD KHABA MAN DASSAHA”. Translation; Truly he succeeds That purifies it (self). And he fails That corrupts it (self)( verses 9 & 10, Surah Al Shams).
Of the five fundamentals of Islam, Zakat occupies the second positioin, the first being prayer (salat). This word is derived from Zakd, which means it (a plant) grew. The second derivative of this word carries the sense of purificatin, e. g. Qad aflaha man zakkaha (he is indeed successful who purified himself).
Surah Duha (the Sun glow) 91 - ayah 9 and 10 Ayah 9: قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا He has succeeded who purifies it (his Nafs/self), qad aflaha man zakaha Qad - Already happened. Absolute certainty. aflaha - he succeeded. Similar word is najaha. aflaha - iflaah - farmer who is about to reap harvest.
“Qod aflaha man zakkaha, Wa qod khoba man dassaha” (Beruntunglah orang-orang yang membersihkan jiwanya dan celakalah orang-orang yang mengotori jiwanya). Begitu pula harta yang tidak dibersihkan dengan zakat, itu tidak akan membuat nyaman. . Jangan lupa mambayar zakat, agar membersihkan jiwa dan harta kita, serta mendapat rahmat Allah SWT. .
